Singapore

Singapore

At customs in Singapore I had put on my nice white shirt, the customs officer thought a good haircut and trimming the beard would do us good, there were some hairdressers on the Malaysian side, so we followed the Singapore customs officer, there was a stamp and we were in Singapore. Another backpacker gave us the address of a cheap hotel on Bencoolen Street.

Impressions from Singapore

The owners were two older ladies, sisters, dressed in black with hair braids down to their buttocks, they played Ma-Jongg every night and usually argued in Chinese. The rooms had walls only 2 thirds high, the rest had chicken bars. Singapore was at the beginning of cleanliness no stumps no chewing gum etc. we visited the Raffel hotel, some small rest. In Singapour On the Singapore River and boats were also there.

We had been away from home for some time now, and every now and then food cravings came up, we often talked about cheese and farmer's bread, I myself longed for an apple pie. We had heard about a large shopping center on Orchard Road, so we set off, on entering it seemed like a land of milk and honey, all sorts of things from French wine to German beer, etc., but the only thing we didn't know was that there was a lot of food. We went to the cheese, the Gruyère from Switzerland, we couldn't afford it, so the desire to eat was there, but on a tight budget. We decided on a Gorgonzola 250 gr. sliced bread, ran to the hotel in a hurry, split the cheese with my pocket knife, the bread too and ate it all in one go. I felt sick as we were no longer used to this kind of food. A tea with the old ladies took care of my nausea. In the evening we were offered countless and also many unpleasant things on the street.
